The Graduate Diploma in Family & Relationship Therapy is a competency based graduate qualification which is accredited through the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT). It provides practical, on the job training, skills and specialised knowledge that is required to provide individuals, couples and families with treatment for a wide range of referral reasons. Entry into the Graduate Diploma is through direct application to William Street Family Therapy Centre.
This course is delivered both online and face-to-face. Theory work is online so students are able to choose when and where they study and work through course material each week in a way that suits them. As part of gaining their qualification, students are required to attend William Street Family Therapy Centre for Experiential group work; group training workshops; as well as work in the William Street Family Therapy Clinic where they both observe and participate in real life sessions with clients and our supervisors. This provides students with practical opportunities to participate and contribute to ongoing excellent therapy with individuals, couples and families. It also provides ongoing supervision of live therapy from a wide range of experienced and accredited clinicians/supervisors.
Entry to this course will be by interview and demonstration of at least one of the following:
- An undergraduate degree or higher qualification in Counselling, Psychotherapy, Psychology, Social Work, Social Science or equivalent; or
- An accredited qualification in counselling at Diploma or Advanced Diploma level; or
- Assessment of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) of the above qualifications.

How long has the course been conducted at WSFTC?
This two-year course has been conducted since 1990. Several hundred graduates have completed the course over the last 35 years and it has been the benchmark of Family & Relationship Therapy Training in Western Australia.
What’s new about the course?
- The course is accredited by the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT) which is the peak body in Family Therapy in Australia.
- It offers “blended delivery” (some online work; as well as face to face group work & live therapy sessions with supervision).
How long does this course take to complete?
This is a two year course done on a part-time basis.
When does the course begin?
February 2025 & we accept a maximum number of 10 students per group, each year. Often we have more than one group each year.
What can I expect from the William Street Family Therapy Clinic?
The WSFTC is a teaching clinic where clients come for therapy at a low fee and allow students to observe and participate in their sessions. As a student, you will either be observing from a separate room, completing tasks given by our supervisors, or participating in the room with the practitioner working with the client. You would be required to take notes, work towards the clients’ goals, and complete client case notes. This is a very unique way to learn as you are then given the opportunity to review your session and receive feedback from your peers and our accredited supervisors. When you are part of the co-therapy team, you will get a video copy of your therapy with clients, to improve your therapy skills.
What is the cost of the course?
$9800.00* inclusive of GST
*Please note that it is a requirement that we receive a $1800.00 deposit before the commencement of the course. The remainder of the fees will be scheduled at a pro-rata basis at the beginning of each semester.
