One Day Workshop - Working Experientially with Individuals, Couples and Families

One-Day Workshop: Aldo Gurgone

Saturday 24 March 2012, 9:30am-4:30pm

Psychotherapy usually involves talk.  In recent years we have seen the popularity of: "dialogues"; "conversations"; "narratives" and other discussions.  These are all part and parcel of the therapist's toolbox. These tools are only part of the resources that therapists need in their work. Talking and understanding is valuable to everyone when one is emotionally calm and at ease.

However, most clients who attend therapy have great difficulty in staying calm when they are emotionally charged, and that is the time when they need to implement the things they discuss in the therapy session.  Action methods or "in vivo" activities in the session provide a way of integrating intellectual understanding when one is emotionally charged.  These methods help to access part of the brain function that is activated when we have a high level of adrenalin in our body.
